The history of Lapu-lapu City influences the cultural involvement of its residents. Many celebrations showcase the exchange of cultural interests, Spanish reflections, ancestral legacy and modern trends.
History
Lapu-Lapu is considered one of the greatest figures of ancient Philippine history. Although the first thing that usually comes to mind when the name of Lapu-Lapu is mentioned is the fact that his battle with Magellan led to Magellan's death, Lapu-Lapu was not honored because of that. Rather, he is honored because he was among the first to reject submission to a foreign power even though Raja Humabon, ruler of the neighboring island of Cebu, and other chiefs recognized the king of Spain as their ruler and agreed to pay tribute.
Chief Lapu-Lapu's (1491-1542) other name is Kolipulako. The hero of Mactan and conqueror of Magellan, is described as stern, proud, intelligent, unyielding. He waged continuous war against the powerful ruler of Cebu, then a very much greater kingdom than his little island of Maktang.
History has it that Mactan Island although small was a thriving community when the great Magellan was in Cebu. The brave Spanish navigator and soldier, upon learning that some inhabitants on this tiny island across Cebu refused to recognize the King of Spain, burned one of the villages. Lapu-Lapu was one of the native leaders who refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of Spain over the Islands.
When Magellan, with three boatloads of Spaniards and twenty boatloads of Cebuanos, went to Mactan to help a friendly chief, Lapu-Lapu and his men armed with native fighting elements, wooden shields, bows and arrows, lances, met them. The invading Spaniards and Cebuanos were driven back to their boats, but their brace leader, Magellan, met death in the hands of Lapu-Lapu. On what is believed to be the exact spot where Magellan fell and died now stands an imposing monument in honor of the gallant explorer.
Lapu-lapu Shrine
The battle between Mactan Island Chieftain Lapu-Lapu and the foreign aggressor Ferdinand Magellan occurred in April 27, 1521. It depicts the hero holding a bolo in one hand and a pestle on the other. Said weapons were believed to have been used during his combat with Magellan. This monument stands as a reminder of Filipino bravery.
The Lapu-Lapu shrine is a 20-meter bronze statue in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island, Cebu, Philippines, erected in honor of Datu Lapu-Lapu, a Muslim king who defeated Spanish soldiers and killed Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan on 1521.
Battle of Mactan
Kadaugan sa Mactan is an annual reenactment of The Battle of Mactan at its site on the beach of barangay Mactan which features Lapulapu's victory on April 27. The events include a fluvial procession of decorated bancas (canoes) representing magellan's three ships, the planting of the Cross of Magellan, the baptism of the natives followed by the battle. Kadaugan sa Mactan literally means "Victory at Mactan" used to be called Bahugbahug sa Mactan.
Legend
Some natives believe that in his final years, Lapu-Lapu did not die, and has been turned into a stone, and is forever guarding the seas of Mactan. Fishermen in the island city throw coins at a stone shaped like a man as a way of asking for permission to fish in the chieftain’s territory.
Another story passed on by the natives of the land says Lapu-Lapu became the statue placed on a pedestal at the center of the plaza. The statue faces the old city hall building where the mayors used to hold office and once held a crossbow in the immortal stance of someone about to shoot an arrow at an enemy. The people of the city decided to change this crossbow with a bolo after a succession of three mayors died due to a heart attack.

Oslob Attractions
Oslob has its share of unique attractions, natural or man-made. Its clean waters and fascinating underwater paradise makes Oslob a perfect place for get-away for those who are looking for something daring or for those who wants to visit the traces of its past glory.
As Argao is known for its torta, Carcar for its chicharon and ampao and Talisay for its lechon, Oslob is also proud of its delicacies such as tostado, rosquillos and podrida, a tasty delicacy that has a resemblance of a flower but with a coconut in the center.
Like any other towns, Oslob is also celebrating the town fiesta with a festival. The Sadsad Festival is a brightly-colored dance festival in honor of its patroness, the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. From a barangay celebration, it is now one of the highlights of the fiesta.
Here are some of Oslob’s attractions that are worth paying a visit:
Immaculada Concepcion Parish (Immaculate Conception Parish)/ Oslob Church
This church is considered one of the oldest churches in the entire province of Cebu. The church itself and the convent are made of cut coral blocks. Comparatively large, the church is in Romanesque in style, conceptualized by Fr. Santos Marañon.
Located in barangay Poblacion, the church was featured as part of the quadrumvirate, alongside the churches of Boljoon, Argao and Dalaguete. They are called “fort-churches and served two purposes during the olden time. Aside from being a place of worship, it served as a safe haven for the inhabitants during the attacks of the Moros which is quite frequent during the time.
Mainit Spring

Among one of the springs that flows freely in the town of Oslob. Located in barangay Mainit, it is rich in sulfuric water that is known to be curative and perfect for your exhausted bodies.
Fr. Mauricio Alvarez was said to be the first one who discovered the medical uses of the spring and responsible in educating the residents about it.
Sumilon Island

One of Oslob’s pride, Sumilon Island is a 24-hectare island, just a 15-minute ride by a pump boat from the main coastland and in a close proximity in the shores of Dumaguete.
This fascinating island boasts of lush vegetation, crystal clear waters and the undamaged underwater attractions. Being the oldest marine sanctuary in the country, it is under the preservation of Silliman University. Teeming with colorful corals and a wide variety of marine faunas, it is best place for snorkeling and diving.
Oslob Seashore
Facing the Bohol Strait, Oslob owned beautiful beaches with powdery white sand and clean waters in blue or in green shades. Its afternoon sea breeze is much cooler and ideal for those who are looking for a place to relax and unwind.
Nueva Caceres Church

It is another beautifully-made church in barangay Nueva Caceres. It used to be a separate town but eventually absorbed by the town of Oslob during the heights of the American occupation.
The Museum of Sacred Heart
It is now of the current attractions in Oslob. It specializes in sacred images and religious artifacts all over the world that are dated back 11th century A.D. Among the most priced possession is the image of St. Joseph and the Holy Child in 21 karat gold, three large emeralds, six diamonds, one aquamarine, one chrysocolla and three bicolor tourmalines.
It is opened by the public but by appointment only. Interested visitors have to inform the office first.
Cuartel

Entertain your eyes with the traces of Oslob’s gloomy past. Only the ruins of this ancient barracks are left. Located in barangay Poblacion facing the Oslob Church.
Baluarte (watchtowers)

Located in the vicinity of the Cuartel area in Poblacion, one can see the ruins of this ancient watchtower. It was part of the defense system in dispelling the Moro raiders during the past.
Calle Aragones

Known to be the oldest street in Oslob.

History of Oslob's name

Long time ago, there was a popular place in town called “Bolocboloc”. The place was called Bolocbol because of its existing spring located beneath the shoreline at the foot of the barangay. The flow of the water was so strong as if the water was boiling which can still be seen at this present time.
At present, the place is now known as Nigad (a name of a tree). The place is named Nigad because of the existing tree that grew in the place which is seldom seen to grow in the shoreline.
From the name Nigad the word “Oslob” was born due to the misunderstandings between the native couple and the two guardia civil (civil guards) in the year 1785. While the said couple were taking a rest under the tree and were eating their brought boiled bananas soaking it with vinegar and salt, the two guardia civil suddenly appeared with the words, as if they were asking: “Como se llama esto pueblo?” – which if translated in English would mean:”What is the name of this town?”.
The couple were astonished for they were not able to comprehend what the civil guards were saying. Since, the couple, at that time, were then soaking bananas with the vinegar and salt, they thought that the civil guards were asking them as to what they were doing, and thus, the couple answered in unison saying ”Toslob”, which means “soaking”.
After hearing the word “Toslob”, the civil guards kept on repeating the word “Toslob” in the thought that the said word was the name of the town. This has been the start of the word “Toslob” which was later changed to “Oslob” due to the passes of time.
Until now, the flowing of the water at Nigad was still there quenching the thirst of the many people of the place including the nearby inhabitants specially when there is a shortage of water.
Culture
Oslob's trademark is usuall its unique way of speaking. The main cebuano dialect usually emits the "l", like "kalayo" to "kayo" and "hulog" to "hug", but with the words used in Oslob, the "l" is ironically exaggerated.
Some words in Oslob's vocabulary also differ from the main cebuano language. There are words like "banga", "igang", "kaaro", "inay" which means "are you sure?", "warm atmosphere", "not really sure on action done", "don't know", respectively.
Oslob also has its annual Sadsad Festival. It is celebrated every year during the town annual fiesta. It is a dance festival wherein the barangays of Oslob come up with a dance to compete for a prize
Sadsad Festival
The word "sadsad",in the local dialect, means dance. This is where the Sadsadfestival got its name. The sadsad festival is held in honor of the patroness, the Immaculate Concepcion. It was started in Barangay Poblacion but was later elevated as the town festival when the barangay captain became the mayor of the town.

Sinulog 2011 is right around the corner. If you’re excited to experience this one-in-a-year celebration, then you better be prepared. Whether you want to take pictures, observe the beautiful dance movements, get heart-thumpingly near to the drum-and-bugle choir or simply enjoy the atmosphere, you should remember to take note of this map. You can even print it so you won’t forget. Best of all, remember to share this map with friends and strangers. You don’t want to be stranded in the wrong place during Sinulog 2011, so better be there when the throng shouts, “Pit Senyor!”
